If you have a network device showing up as “Unknown” + the MAC address, just click the item (it is underlined and a working link) and then select Configure. Enter a new name for the device and perhaps even specify what kind of device this is. Now, your list only contains sensible names. An extra bonus here is the fact that this the Thomson 5×6 saves this name in its DNS table – meaning you now can ping your device from any command line in your network.

This tip is my wording on Christian Arheim’s solution…

If you notice your home PCs are all of a sudden replying with wrong host names, your 5×6 has messed up its DNS table (again). Do this:

  • Open your favourite web browser (I use Firefox, of course)
  • Type in one of the following:
  • If you have turned on that your 5×6 should answer to https, replace http with https
  • Navigate to
    • Home Network
    • Devices
    • Configure (upper right-hand corner)
  • Either click Remove on offending entries only, or remove’m all and let the list rebuild
  • Repeat when necessary…

Note: List will for a “short” time contain entries like “Unknown AA-BB-CC-DD-EE-FF” where the hex part is the interface MAC address.
